LINEAL is a nomadic project space for contemporary art.
WHO — LINEAL is the nomadic project space of artist Melissa Hopson — sculptor, trained at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and Herron School of Art + Design, based in Indianapolis.
WHAT — Exhibitions and site-responsive installations in borrowed, found, and partner spaces — each one paired with the artist's own telling of the work: where it comes from, what it means, and the place it belongs to, whether that place is a street, a homeland, or an idea.
WHEN — Founded 2026. First presentation to be announced.
WHERE — Based in Indianapolis, at work anywhere a space is offered. LINEAL is deliberately un-tied to any single city or partnership — no fixed address, no fixed circuit: wherever it is invited.
Why nomadic — Most galleries start with a room and go looking for art. LINEAL starts with the work and goes looking for the room. Each project is sited, scaled, and built for one place and one run — then the line moves on. What stays is the standard: measured, true, and made by hand.
The Lineage — Every LINEAL presentation is also a telling. Alongside the work, the artist speaks — in writing, in conversation, in their own voice — about its lineage: the teachers, places, losses, and inheritances inside it, and what the work means now. The object is the exhibition. The lineage is what makes it legible.
