The Lineage

Lineages

Every LINEAL presentation is also a telling. Alongside the work, the artist speaks - in writing, in conversation, in their own voice - about its lineage: the teachers, places, losses, and inheritances inside it, and what the work means now. The object is the exhibition. The lineage is what makes it legible.

In Their Own Voice

Lineages

Before the work, the telling. Each LINEAL artist speaks in their own voice about where the work comes from, what it means, and the place it belongs to — a street, a homeland, or an idea. These tellings are the Lineages, and they stay on the record after the exhibition moves on.

Host a Project: A Room You Don't Own

Host a Project

A room you don't own. LINEAL is built for borrowed, found, and partner spaces - a hall, a storefront, a barn, a room with good light and a story. If you have a space and want art measured to it, write to info@lineal-art.com. The line comes to you.

About LINEAL

WHO - LINEAL is the nomadic project space of artist Melissa Hopson - sculptor, trained at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and Herron School of Art + Design, based in Indianapolis.

WHAT - Exhibitions and site-responsive installations in borrowed, found, and partner spaces — each one paired with the artist's own telling of the work: where it comes from, what it means, and the place it belongs to, whether that place is a street, a homeland, or an idea.

WHEN - Founded 2026. First presentation to be announced.

WHERE - Based in Indianapolis, at work anywhere a space is offered. LINEAL is deliberately un-tied to any single city or partnership — no fixed address, no fixed circuit: wherever it is invited.

Why nomadic - Most galleries start with a room and go looking for art. LINEAL starts with the work and goes looking for the room. Each project is sited, scaled, and built for one place and one run - then the line moves on. What stays is the standard: measured, true, and made by hand.
